I will be running a D&D 4.0 game on either alternating Tuesdays or alternating Saturdays or alternating Sundays starting in June. I have the idea to run it in an original version of the Lorwyn/Morningtide/Shadowfell/Eventide universe depicted in Magic: The Gathering's latest sets.

For the D&D players out there: This universe is a rich, roleplaying-centric world that is in a time of great turmoil as the universe itself changes in a cataclysmic magical/natural transformation. The world moves from light into darkness; what was once peaceful becomes warlike; and the face of reality is changing. Can you help to bring back the light? Will you be able to restore your people to their former glory, or will you be claimed by the darkness? New races make an appearance, including the elemental flamekin and the doughty treefolk. The classes, too, are somewhat different: in addition to Warriors, Rogues, Wizards, and Archers, there are also Shamans, Knights, Druids, Clerics, and Assassins...as well as a few more.

For the Magic players out there: Play a hardy and versatile Kithkin, a stout and wise Treefolk, a nimble Elf, a constantly-changing Changeling, a fiery Flamekin, or one of the newer--and rarer--creatures who are entering the world through dimensional rifts. Meet planeswalkers; fight boggarts; adventure with giants; fight against--or ally with--Maralen, Rhys, Sygg, and many others. Enter the world of Lorwyn and learn the meaning behind the cards...

I intend to run the game centered on the Wanderwine Hub, and players (up to 6 per session) can show up and play, for one session or a small number of sessions per adventure. This won't just be one gaming group that constantly meets, but a lot of different people in a shared universe. We'll have special events, and each game will last roughly 4 hours.

If you've never played D&D before or if you're a veteran, I guarantee you I will do my best to entertain and amuse. If you're interested, reply here, and we'll get this party started.

More Info:

I'm going to be running something similar to what's known as a Green/Red Dragon Inn game, where the characters are in a shared universe and have reasons to adventure with one another, but aren't necessarily the same characters/players every session. I'll be running an adventure, mebbe 1-2 sessions (not including chargen) then perhaps another group will play with one or the other players in or out, and like so, depending on who signs up to play which days. There will also be days where everyone will get together and roleplay to share their information--think of the whole thing like a series of missions to uncover a mystery, where each group has a piece of the puzzle but all of them combined need to work on their parts to get a coherent whole. Individual groups will have a large sense of accomplishment, as each piece will be a satisfactory and important adventure with a climax all its own.

The game world will be set in (as I've mentioned) the Lorwyn/Morningtide/Shadowmoor/Eventide universe from the Magic: The Gathering latest card sets. The reason for this choice is that it's a very vibrant universe with a large amount of D&D feel (classes, races, interspecies warfare, magic, magic items, etcetera); it isn't completely detailed as a D&D world (like established settings are); and it has a rich story/flavor background and troubles and strife of its own. I am free to customize the experience to the characters and make my own stories in it, and yet still maintain a source of information that I can use to check myself.

The initial story begins as follows:
It is the beginning of Lorwyn's last days. Colfenor's demise has led to the sapling he left behind, armed with knowledge of the entire history of the great Treefolk, recruiting agents to gather information according to a plan only he is fully privy to that might explain to all the races just what exactly is going on in Lorwyn.

A great change is at hand, and the ripples of that change have sparked chaos throughout the world. Your people--your Cenns, your Perfects, your Aunties, your communities as a whole--have been contacted. You have been selected as one amongst many to work with those who would help Lorwyn maintain its integrity. Rifts in space have been opened; odd creatures never before seen in the Known World have appeared to do battle with the established races and just as suddenly disappear. Entire groups of your own people have disappeared, returning with tales of being compelled to battle with others and, when falling, suddenly returning to whence they came...if they returned at all.

You have gathered at the Wanderwine Hub, central riverpost and the Grand Central Station of the merrow waterways, where races of all sorts have met since time immemorial united by trade. Strong and wise Treefolk, doughty and adaptable Kithkin, noble and aloof Elves of both the Exquisite and Faultless castes, mysterious Flamekin, enigmatic Changelings and, even, the hated Boggarts have all been accepted, in the belief that only together (no matter how much they don't get along normally) can they solve the great mysteries.

Have the gods abandoned Lorwyn? What causes this disturbance? More importantly, how can it be stopped?

(Note: The answer is not as simple as it might seem out of game...)

The game system will be modified D&D 4.0, with custom races.
Confirmed PC races to date are:
Exquisite Elf: The second-highest caste of elves under the Perfects, known for intelligence, wisdom, and their abilities to mold living wood into works of art...and to control other plants as well.

Immaculate Elf: Beneath the Perfect and Immaculate caste are the strong, swift Faultless and Immaculate castes, who are the fiercest warriors of the lands and who are, by and large, the source of the Elves' power in Lorwyn.

Kithkin: Lucky and adaptable, the kithkin, united in hope and bravery by the Thoughtweft which links them with others of their kind, the Kithkin are hardy and wise.

Changeling: Consummate mimics rarely seen in their natural forms, the mysterious changelings are experts at appearing as anything they wish and copying the abilities of their opposition.

Treefolk: Strong and wise, the treefolk are slow to anger and move but fierce in their battles. Healing faster than others, with little need to sleep, the wisdom of the treefolk guides the other races more often than not.

Flamekin: With their affinity to the elemental world of fire, flamekin wander the world in search of their personal quests. They are not only consummate diplomats but also highly skilled warriors with the ability to raise the temperature around them to a burning pitch.

Boggart: Wily, ugly, and fast, the boggarts are considered scum by most of the other races, but in their own eyes they are merely fighting for survival in a world that scorns them because of their ugliness. Never known for their ability to work together, but nonetheless clever in their inventions and their ability to become a ball of rending claws and teeth, the boggarts are either the greatest liability to the world or its greatest unknown asset.

Possible Races are:
Faerie
Merfolk
Elemental
Giant
(possibly others from the Tenth Edition, Coldsnap, Time Spiral, Futuresight, and Planar Chaos sets)
...depending on whether or not any of the last group can be made into playable races without imbalances.

Classes:
Soldiers/Warriors
Cleric/Shaman
Wizards
Rogues/Assassins
Druids
Archers
Knights

The game will begin in mid to late June, because I need time to review D&D 4.0's *standard* rules and adapt my own races and classes to them. It will run on alternating Tuesdays or alternating Saturdays or alternating Sundays (depending on groups, time, etcetera).

Time to Play.

Scott, I'm actually getting excited about this game. I think Howard and I are going to have to fight over who gets to be the Treefolk Shaman.

However, I don't think that Changelings will make good PCs. Here's some info from the Magic site:

The changelings of Lorwyn are a race of semi-intelligent humanoids who involuntarily change their shape into that of the creatures around them. They have childlike expressions and translucent, blue-green bodies. Their magical bodies transform reflexively, like the skin of chameleons or octopuses.

Changelings are skilled at mimicry, but they're far from devious or deceptive. Changelings are obvious. No matter what shape a changeling takes, it always has its characteristic opalescent sheen and its translucent "Gummi Bear" look to it. They can't use their transformation abilities to their own advantage, because they automatically adapt to whatever forms are near them. You never look at a creature in Lorwyn and wonder, "Is that really a shapeshifter in disguise?" because you can always tell.

Changelings have no culture per se. They don't have technology or art. When they speak, it's incoherent parroting. They are creatures of high magic, but they don't have the intellectual wherewithal to forge an agenda as a race.

We may not need to fight for the Treefolk Shaman, Bob.

Lil bro and I were brainstorming last night and the idea of Boggart Sprite-Chaser and accompanying faerie sounded really fun.

It's likely that I'm keeping changelings, merely changing them to suit my own needs. After all, if I were to do it -all- Lorwyn-esque, you'd be facing (or be playing) elves with moonglove poison that killed instantly whenever you got hit.

I like the idea of a Changeling society and culture; it's a meme from other D&D worlds that bears carrying over.

Good link, by the by.

I don't think there are going to be faerie PCs, sadly. The ability to fly, the fact that they come in threes almost exclusively, their powers of dream harvesting, their mastery of glamer, and many other elements about them make them too powerful for a PC to play. Especially the flight part. It's possible I'll allow it later in the game, but to start off with I'm not going to be using them.

I will, however, be using merfolk.

Interested folks so far:
Joe D. :)
Howard Heitler
Attila Heitler
Frank Kang
Bob Leong
John Freiler
Adam Wright
Jim Hernandez

That's 8, which makes for 2 groups of 4 or maybe something different. I'll post more details as I have them!

Group 1: Alternating Saturdays before tournament
* Bob Leong
* Howard Heitler
* Attila Heitler
* Eric Toman
* Steve Abascal
* Frank Kang

(It would be a good idea if one member of this group would move to group 2 if we get no more interest)

Group 2: Alternating Sundays
* Joe D.
* James Hernandez
* Adam Wright
* John Freiler
( I have one or two open slots in this group )

I can make a 3rd group (on alternating Tuesdays). I can have up to 6 people in a group, so there's basically 2 slots open in the existing groups; and another group possible of up to 6, so up to 8 more people can play. :)

PS: I fully expect Erik to see this post in like 6-8 months. We should start a gambling pool on when he mentions it.

Hello,

Bob told me about this place and I'd love to check it out. I'm a complete neophyte to card/mini/d&d based games, but not to RPG's in general so I believe I'll be able to pick things up quickly. I'll be coming by the store on D&D day to check things out. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Okay, the groups are now set:

Group 1 (Saturdays):
* Bob Leong
* Howard Heitler
* Attila Heitler
* Eric Toman
* Steve Abascal
* Frank Kang

This group will meet for character generation on Saturday, June 14th at 1:00PM and for its first game on Saturday, June 28th at 1:00PM.

Group 2 (Sundays):
* James Hernandez
* Adam Wright
* John Freiler
* Mike Feier
* Joe D.
* Bebarce

This group will meet for character generation on Sunday, June 15th at 1:00PM and for its first game on Sunday, June 29th at 1:00PM. NOTE: This game may well be interrupted periodically between 3:00PM and 6:00PM.

It is expected that each player will pick up a 4.0 Player's Handbook from the store (if you don't already have one; and not necessarily at the first session, but at some point over the course of the game).

More details will follow...

There will also be a waiting list, for people who want to drop in sporadically, let me know on this post if you want to be in a 4.0 game and aren't and would like to be on the alternates list (or just drop by).

Frank Kang is dropping out - possibly going to be a DM instead, so Bebarce is going to fill his spot in the Saturday game.

See you all Saturday at 1.

There are two PTQ magic events on the next two Saturdays. Many of the magic players who play on Saturday will be going to one or both. Erik, Rascal and myself are going to miss both and Howard and Attila will miss at least the 28th. I think that we should change the date and time to meet for these two weeks. Maybe Sunday before the other group starts? Whatever is good for the people involved and of course, convenient for Scott also.

Sorry Bebarce!

Wellp, the 28th was our next scheduled Saturday game. I can move that to the 26th (Thursday) if you'd like, but that's pretty much the only choice I have in the matter.

Also, the games on the 12th and 13th of July (Saturday and Sunday) will be cancelled. I can reschedule those during the week, too.

What it looks like now:

Saturday Group Confirmed:
Saturday 26th July

Alternate Dates:
Thursday 26 June
Monday 7 July (yes I'll open the store)
Thursday 10 July
Tuesday 15 July
Thursday 24 July

Sunday Group Confirmed:
Sunday 29 July
Sunday 27 July

Sunday Group Alternate Dates:
Monday 7 July (yes I'll open the store)
Thursday 10 July
Tuesday 15 July

Let me know.

I don't know the schedule well enough so this may sound like a bad suggestion, but if we shifted everything down or up 1 week wouldn't that fix all these problems? So instead of June 28th it was June 21st or July 5?

If not then it's cool, I can kinda come during the week so long as you guys don't mind my coming in as late at 8:30 and or missing it (depending on if my kid kicks my ass that night.)

By and large, the selection of dates above is based upon my reliability. After all, the game can run without a PC or two, but it can't run at all without the DM. :)

Okay I've fixed the situation with Weekdays, so while its still preferable to be there on the weekends for me, I am able to come out on Weekdays, and closer to the 7pm start time (although still not exactly then).

Last week I got all the way to the parking lot when I got a call from my wife that my kid woke up and wouldn't go back to sleep. 4 hours later of still not going to sleep we let her just cry it out. Since then we started letting her cry it out every night, and now she goes to bed with little fuss.

When is the next meeting? Sooner the better for me since I'm eager to get some game time. Bob has filled me in on whats happened so far.

I think that the general vibe is that we're all excited to play again soon. The session that would have been on the 12th is already going to be rescheduled. When do we want to do that? The dates that seem to make sense that Scott posted are Monday July 7th and Thursday July 10th. I would be fine with either day, but the sooner the better. How do the rest of you feel about it?

I'm for Monday July 7th if everyone else is game.

edit: Hey, also quick question for Scott. If as a Paly, I wanted to Multiclass as a cleric the benefits list that you get "religion" as a skill. As a paly since I already have religion what happens?
Nothing? Choose another skill from Cleric? Add a bonus to my current religion skill?

Just wondering.

Because of the Monday debacle, I'm going to try to personally confirm that people can make it. The problem seems to be that Erik and Rascal haven't been using the forums, since everyone else was ready to go.

So when is the next game?

I see an alternate date of July 24th and a confirmed date of July 26th. Maybe we can game on both of those days to make up for lost chances to play and try and catch up to the Sunday group? I'm up for any time this week Scott has available as well.

I find it a little sad and a lot hilarious that we probably couldn't have chosen a possible worse day/week combination to hold our Magic D&D thing if we tried. The 26th isn't going to work out since it'll be the GambitCon and I'm fairly certain the majority of us will be playing in the Eventide release event and Scott will be busy doing Scott-work.

I'm down on most any make up days.

I got in touch with Erik, and he's going to be back on the 22nd, so we should be able to get a decent game together on the 24th. I'm going to go ahead and make that a firm date for the group. I'll try to confirm everything with everyone, including Scott so we don't have any issues like the Monday/Thursday debacle of last week.

Hey Scott. Could you somehow put the updated character sheets online? That way i can print mine out at work.

Also, boo on the Heat Aura

(A removal of sustain minor on Improved Heat Aura, would be nice)
